Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian-American blogger and media critic who has been awarded awards for her work, is an activist blogger. Feminist Frequency is an educational site for non-profit organizations that investigates representations of women in the popular media narratives. Alongside working to expose the issues surrounding the targeted and sexist attack on women and other minorities in online spaces she is dedicated to breaking down the stigmas and stereotypes associated with popular culture. With a master's in social and political thought at York University Sarkeesian is also well-known as a sought-after speaking engagement and has given speech at the TEDxWomen Festival as well as The United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. She was interested in gender issues and feminism at a young stage of her life. When she graduated in 2009, continuing to study at the university level she launched her Feminist Frequency site. She had a plan to start a web-based series on the gender roles in video games. She found herself the target of an online harassment campaign. But the assault did have been a hindrance, rather it only strengthened her resolve as a feminist media critic. Her notable contributions to the field of feminist are recognized with numerous awards. Anita Sarkeesian has been a media critic for several years and founded Feminist Frequency. This educational nonprofit explores women's representations in the pop-culture narratives.
